Mixed Metals
Muffy wouldn’t let me out the door. “You’re not wearing silver and gold together?”
Muffy is steeped in Edwardian etiquette from her frugal WASPy upbringing. She’s even a Colonial Dame! Ancient rules defined that if you’re rich enough to own gold jewelry, you must not add a silver piece because that means, obviously, that you’ve run out of gold.
“That’s a fusty old rule,” I said. “Right here on the Vogue website it says you can wear gold and silver together as long as they have a compatible design.
”
”Like what?” Muffy frowned.
“Look here. The bracelet is made of silver glass cubes, and then the embellishment is made of the same cubes, but in gold. It’s simple, it’s contemporary, and it works.”
Muffy pouted . “It’s still all wrong. You can’t go out like that.”
“Okay, fine.” I took the bracelet off and flipped it inside out. Anything to get out of there.

Not Edwardian, but almost art nouveau, Mixed Metals ( $40) does silver and gold, night and day, casual and formal. This could be the only bracelet you ever own. But what fun is that?
